Rider University Ice Hockey – Along the Boards Week 6

By: Matt Metzger

The Rider Broncs (11th in the Southeast – 7-4-0,14pts) will look to rebound and dropping their only contest this past weekend. As the Broncs return home they will be kicking off a stretch of ten games out of eleven that will come against MACH opponents.

Broncs Strike First, Rowan Responds for Win

Larry Walker (Sophomore, Medford, NJ) put the Broncs up one halfway through the first period against interstate and MACH rival the Rowan University Profs (7th in the Southeast – 6-3-0-1,13pts). The Profs netted the equalizer after Alec Nicolai beat Nate Kholodenko (Senior, Wayne, NJ) with just 53 seconds remaining in the opening frame. After surrendering the tying goal at the end of the first, the Broncs gave up three more unanswered markers as they fell 4-1. The loss stalled the Rider winning streak at two games and it drops the team to 1-3 in MACH play.

Loose Pucks:

Chris Johnson (Freshman, Freeport, NY) leads all Rider freshman with 11 points in 11 games (6g,5a). He recorded his first career hat-trick as the Broncs downed the University of Maryland 6-3 back on October 25.

Starting at 11: The Rider Broncs are ranked 11th in the Southeast division. As the Broncs look to return to the regional playoff picture after falling short last year, they will have to play their way into one of the top ten ranking positions.

The Week Ahead:

Game 12: Friday, November 7, 2014 at 8:30 p.m. (H)

After their one game road trip against Rowan, the Broncs will return home for their second meeting of the season against the Temple University Owls (9th in the Southeast – 8-6-0-2,18pts). The Broncs comeback effort fell short on Saturday, October 18, 2014 as they dropped a 5-4 decision at the Northeast Skate Zone.

Game 13: Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. (H)

On Saturday night Rider will open the two game season series against the Monmouth Hawks (NR, 4-5-0-1,9pts) as they wrap up their two-game homestand. Last season the Broncs beat the Hawks by a combined score of 17-4 in their 2013-2014 season series.

They Said It…

Entering the weekend with a 1-3 record against MACH opponents, Head Coach Sean Levin talks about the importance of these two games…

“Friday’s game against Temple is a must win,” said Levin. “We hoped to avoid these types of ‘must win’ games this early on in the season but we cannot afford to go 1-5 in the MACH North and drop another game against a team ranked ahead of us. Our success has been when we focus on battling every shift and winning the 50/50 pucks. Against good teams it only takes one let down, one mental mistake to shift the momentum against us.

When looking forward to their matchup against Monmouth, Levin made it very clear that his team needs to remain focused for this contest, regardless of their recent head-to-head success.

“We cannot overlook Monmouth. They play a simple game and if we fail to dictate the tempo, we could find ourselves playing from behind. We need to utilize our depth and team speed to create scorning chances.”
