Four Broncs Earn Award Nominations

By: Matt Metzger

Good news has kept coming for the Rider ice hockey program as the 2014-2105 season drew to a close. Not only will the Broncs be playing in the MACH playoffs but four players have earned post-season award nominations at their positions. Conner Fox (Junior, Belle Meade, NJ), Pat Grilli (Senior, Holland, PA), Chris Johnson, (Freshman, Freeport, NY) and Nate Kholodenko (Senior, Wayne, NJ) have all earned the opportunity to be discussed in individual categories.

Broncs rookie forward Chris Johnson he has been nominated for the MACH Rookie of the Year Award. Along with Johnson, Peter Kaz (Rowan) and Felipe Rodriguez (Virginia Tech) were also nominated. For Johnson, his first season was all about proving he belonged at this level.

“I knew coming in as a freshman I would have to work hard to prove I can skate at this level,” said Johnson. “Aside from just having an offensive mindset I think my ability to play defensively around both sides of the puck has allowed me to earn this nomination.”

For senior netminder Nate Kholodenko, this season has been a fitting conclusion to an impressive four-year run with the Broncs. According to Kholodenko, it is the competition with the ACHA and MACH that brings the best out of him.

“Since it’s my last season, it would be cool to take home this award,” said Kohlodenko. “However, I do understand there are a ton of great goalies in this league in addition to the other two finalists. What makes this league fun to play in as a goalie is that you are never playing against a bad goalie. As you stare down the opposing goalie for the duration of the game, you know in order to win this game you’re going to have outplay the other goalie. It’s a challenge that brings out the best in all of us and keeps you motivated to be the best. “

Conner Fox has been a staple on the Rider blueline and the third-year defenseman has now been recognized as one of the top at his position. Along with the defensive nomination for Fox, Pat Grilli is no stranger to leading the offensive charge for the Broncs. The senior forward finished the campaign leading the Broncs in all offensive categories and he finished the 2014-2015 season as the 61st highest scoring forward in the nation.

All award winners will be notified on Friday, February 13, 2015, prior to the start of the 2015 MACH playoffs.
