Rider University Ice Hockey – Along the Boards Week 14

By: Matt Metzger

With the playoffs just a week away the Rider Broncs (8th in the Southeast – 18-12-0,36pts) wrapped up their 2014-2015 regular season schedule with contests against Bowling Green State University (9-8-1-1,20pts)  and Toledo University (6th in the Southeast – 18-5-1-1,38pts).

Broncs Power Play Stalls, Falcons Win 4-3

At the end of the first period against Bowling Green, the Broncs found themselves in a favorable position up two goals thanks to markers by Peter Malamud (Senior, Richboro, PA) and Luke Liddell (Senior, Philadelphia, PA). Unfortunately for the Broncs, success on the power play was not in the cards as they failed to capitalize on 12 opportunities in the second and third periods. The struggling Rider power play combined with four unanswered Falcon goals, found the Broncs on the losing end after Brett Ansbacher (Sophomore, Massapequa Park, NY) brought them within one goal.

Rider Blanked by Toledo to Close Season

Looking to set the tone for the 2015 MACH playoffs, the Broncs could not solve Toledo netminder Zac Cherney. Cherney was able to turn away all 30 Rider shots as Sven Weisser, Zach Born, Kyle Swansegar and Austin Fletcher all found the back of the net. The game was not short on intensity as three Broncs and three Rockets were all ejected for fighting midway through the second period. The two second period and two third period goals were enough to hand the Broncs the shutout loss to close their regular season campaign.

Loose Pucks

Heading into the final rankings period, the Broncs find themselves in the eighth position in the Southeast. A deep playoff run could all but guarantee the Broncs return trip to the Southeast Regional Competition.

For Rider Broncs will be looking forward to the MACH post season awards announcement as Nate Kholodenko, Pat Grilli, Connor Fox and Chris Johnson have all been nominated for award consideration. Follow RiderIceHockey.org for the full story.
