#65 Nick Leelum
Height: 5’8″
Weight: 180
Position: Forward
Home Town: Massapequa Park, NY
Academic Year: Sophomore

Q – At what age did you start playing hockey and who/what pushed you try and ultimately stick with the game?

A-  I started playing hockey at age 5. I was big into football as a kid, but I started playing hockey because my brother did. I stuck with hockey because I hated to run and loved to skate, and eventually I gave up all the land sports I played to focus on just hockey.

Q – Is their one particular play, goal, hit, save, etc…that really stands out over your playing career?

A – My first hockey hit ever was when I was a squirt playing house league. I remember watching videos of NHL players throwing body checks before the game. On my first shift I skated full speed at the kid with the puck and threw an big open ice hit. Since I was a squirt and it was house league, which is a no hitting age/league, I got yelled at by my coach and sat in the penalty box for a while

Q  -Hockey is one of the more “team” based sports. What is the dynamic like to be a part of that atmosphere? (in the locker room, on the bus, practice, etc…)

A – The practices where everyone is loose and having fun are the best. The atmosphere where you can be joking around with your teammates while also being competitive is something that energizes me.

Q – Think back to your freshman year, what was the biggest adjustment to playing on the college level?

A – The speed of the game. It’s a lot faster than playing at the 18U level. Adjusting to the speed of the game was the hardest task for me as a freshman.

Q – Some hockey players are known to be very superstitious; do you have any superstitions, pre-game during, etc…?

A – After the team warm up, I do another warm up that I’ve done by myself before every game since high school. I also put all my right gear on first.

Q – Favorite Team?

A – New York Rangers

Q – Favorite Player?

A – Erik Karlsson

Q – Pre-Game Meal?

A – Chicken and white rice a few hours before the game. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich before I leave for the rink

Q – What type of music, if any, do you listen to before a game?

A – I like to listen to reggae up until around 10 minutes before we go out to skate. During those last 10 minutes I’ll listen to whatever music is on in the locker room.

Q – What is the one piece of equipment you are most picky about?

A – I put a lot of attention towards my elbow pads. They always slide down my arm and annoy me during the game. I should probably just buy new ones.
